California Work Zone & Construction Zone Rules

Work zones are among the most dangerous areas on California roads. Fines are doubled in active work zones, and the rules are strict. This section covers what the DMV tests you on regarding construction zones and traffic control.

Work Zone Speed & Fines

Posted speed limits in work zones must be obeyed. Fines for speeding and other violations in active work zones are doubled when workers are present. An active work zone is indicated by orange signs and/or cones and the presence of workers.

Traffic Breaks

A traffic break is used by CHP officers to slow or stop traffic. An officer performs a traffic break by activating rear emergency lights and slowly weaving across all lanes. When you see a traffic break, slow down, do not pass the officer, and stop when directed. Traffic breaks are used to clear hazards, allow emergency access, or manage incidents ahead.

Key Rules at a Glance

  • Work zone fines: Doubled when workers are present
  • Work zone identification: Orange signs, cones, and worker presence
  • Traffic break — what to do: Slow down, do not pass the officer
