California DMV Knowledge & Drive Test Guide

The California DMV knowledge test is the first hurdle on your path to a driver's license. Understanding the test format, rules, and what to expect on the drive test will help you walk in confident and walk out licensed.

Knowledge Test Format & Attempts

The knowledge test is based on the California Driver Handbook. You are allowed three attempts to pass before you must reapply and pay the fee again. Minors must wait 7 days between attempts; adults can generally retake sooner. No aids are allowed during the test — no handbook, no phone, no notes.

Vision Test & Restrictions

Before the knowledge test, you'll take a vision screening. If you use corrective lenses during this test, a corrective lenses restriction will be placed on your license. If you don't pass the vision test, the DMV may ask your eye doctor to complete a Report of Vision Examination.

What to Bring for the Drive Test

On the day of your drive test, bring a safe vehicle with valid proof of insurance and current registration. Minors must be accompanied by a California-licensed driver who is at least 25 years old. If using a rental vehicle, your name must appear on the rental contract and the contract must permit drive tests.

Drive Test Rules

The examiner may ask you to demonstrate the parking brake and other basic controls before you begin. Your vehicle must have at least two rearview mirrors, one on the left side. Interpreters may assist only during the pre-drive inspection — not during the actual drive test. Advanced driver assistance systems like automated parallel parking are not permitted during the test. If a minor fails, they must wait 14 days before retaking.
