California Freeway, Merging & Passing Rules
Freeway driving requires faster decision-making and precise lane discipline. California has specific rules for entering, passing, and exiting freeways that are heavily tested on the DMV knowledge exam.
Merging onto the Freeway
Use the on-ramp to accelerate to freeway speed before merging. Yield to traffic already on the freeway — they have the right of way. Signal your intent to merge. Do not stop at the end of an on-ramp unless traffic is too heavy to merge safely.
Passing Rules
Pass on the left unless traffic is moving in marked lanes, in which case you may use any lane. Do not pass on the right shoulder. After passing, return to the right lane. You may not exceed the speed limit when passing. Before changing lanes to pass, check your mirrors, signal, check your blind spot, and then move.
Freeway Lane Discipline
The far-left lane is for passing and faster traffic; keep right except when passing. Do not weave between lanes. On a freeway, signal at least 5 seconds before changing lanes. Keep a safe following distance — at freeway speeds, a 3-second gap is the minimum; 4 seconds in poor conditions.
